Exploring the Connection Between Perimenopause, Menopause and Anxiety
It is estimated that over 40 million women in the United States suffer from some form of anxiety. Many women do not seek help for their anxiety because they believe that it is a normal part of aging or menopause.
Connecting Perimenopause, Menopause and Anxiety
If you're a woman in your 40s or 50s, chances are you've started to notice some changes in your body. Your menstrual cycles may become unpredictable, your periods may be heavier or lighter than usual, and you may be experiencing emotional changes too.
These changes are all part of perimenopause, the transition into menopause. And while they can be annoying and uncomfortable, they're also perfectly normal.
However, many women also report feeling more anxious during perimenopause. In fact, anxiety is one of the most common complaints during this time.
There are a few possible explanations for the increased anxiety during perimenopause. First, the hormone fluctuations can themselves cause anxiety. Second, anxiety may be a response to the stress of dealing with all the physical changes happening in your body.
Effects of Hormonal Changes During Perimenopause and Menopause
As women age, we go through many changes in our bodies. One of the most significant changes is the decrease in hormones, which can cause a variety of symptoms.
During menopause, the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone. This can cause irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and other symptoms.
There are many treatments available to help manage the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. When transitioning into this phase of life, it is important to consult with your doctor to gain guidance on treatment options and rule-out other causes of symptoms you’re experiencing. Medical interventions may include hormone replacement therapy, lifestyle changes, or natural remedies.
In addition to medical interventions, it is also helpful to seek out therapy as a means of support during this transition.
Symptoms of Menopause Anxiety
Perimenopause or menopause and anxiety can be a difficult combination with which to deal. The changes in hormone levels can cause a variety of physical and emotional symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. On top of that, the anxiety itself can be very debilitating, making it hard to focus on anything else.
The journey may feel overwhelming at times, but remember, you're not alone in facing these challenges. Allow yourself the space to prioritize self-care, whether it's through moments of rest, engaging in activities that bring joy, or seeking therapy. Remember, you've navigated life's twists and turns before, and with each passing phase, you've emerged stronger. As you confront anxiety during perimenopause and menopause, remember that this is just one chapter in your incredible journey. While it may seem hard to embrace now, the best chapters of your life may still be waiting to be written.
